Introduction: How to Put Up a Curtain Pole

In this instructable I will show you how easy it is to put up a curtain pole and hang curtains. Some may see this as a difficult task, but it really isn't that difficult. Hanging curtains is a simple way to transform a room and make a room warmer.

Step 1: Things You Will Need

You will only need a couple of tools for this job. These are:

• A drill
• Drill bit
• Tape measure
• Screwdriver
• Sprit Level (I used my Stanley Cubex laser level again, although not really necessary)
• Knife
• Curtain pole
• Curtain hooks
• Curtains

Step 2: Unpack the Curtain Pole

First off you need to open up the curtain pole package and check that everything is there and not broken (our first curtain pole was delivered very broken). If everything is all looking ok then you will need to unpack the hardware and check it all. This pole came with three hooks that are made up of three parts as well as the screws required to fix it to the wall.

Step 3: Measuring

Most curtain poles will come with fitting instructions and measurements. This one suggested that the bracket on the left and the right should be 100mm outside the edge of the window. Then the third goes in the middle of the two (the middle can be found by dividing the distance between the two edge one by two). This made measuring nice and easy.

As I have said before, measure twice, drill once.

Step 4: Finding the Level and Marking the Holes

Firstly, you need to mark a level vertical line so you can get the two screws nice and level. I did this with a normal sprit level but you could do this with a set square if you are mounting it on a wooden batten.

To find the horrizontal level I used my Stanley Cubix laser level. I mounted this to the door and shot the laser at the window. Using this does make the whole job so much easier. If you do not have one it is easy enough to use a normal level and tape measure.

I was mounting the curtain pole on a wooden batten so I used the bottom of it as a reference point. These brackets require two holes so I marked the first on the level line (I actually moved the level line up a bit but didn't take a new photo).

Step 5: Drill Holes and Assemble Hangers

The next step is to drill the hole. This will be done differently depending on what material you are mounting the pole on. As I said earlier, I am mounting this on a wooden batten above the window so I drilled a small pilot holes for the screws. If you are going to mount the pole straight into brick or plaster board you will require wall plugs. This curtain pole came with some wall plugs for that application.

I read the reviews on this curtain pole online and people were saying that it was really difficult to put together so they gave it bad reviews. Don't be put off by this. They are not difficult at all. The first bit gets screwed to the wall with the first screw. The hanger goes on next, then the cross bit goes on next. The hanger can be moved in and out so you can vary the distance away from the window.

Step 6: Mounting the Pole

The final step in this process is to mount the pole. If you've done everything properly, then it should all fit nicely. Be sure to evenly split the curtain rings on both sides of the middle hanger. The other important thing to remember is to put one hoop on the outside of the end hangers. This will prevent the end of the curtain from moving when you draw them.

Step 7: Hanging the Curtains

The curtains we chose were pencil pleat so firstly I pulled the cords on either side to get the ruffles. If you have chosen this type of curtain too its always a good idea to hold it up to the half of the window to make sure you haven't pulled them too much.

Next you will need to add the curtain hooks. You will notice from the picture that there are three different bit you can hook them into. We chose to use the top one as we wanted to see the curtain hoops. If you have curtain rain you may chose to use the bottom one to cover up the rail. To hook the hooks in come in from the bottom, this will ensure the hooks are the right way up to hook into hoops (or rail if you used one).

Step 8: Stand Back and Enjoy

if you've done everything correctly, you should have a nice level curtain pole and curtains that come together.

I will be adding curtain ties to the wall shortly, these are very easy to install. Its basically one screw.
